Found Sound is an auto-generative art work which uses audio from the Coventry Cathedral archive to create an ever-changing composition. Found Sound can be accessed remotely online and/or as a socially distant artwork at the site of the cathedral.
Our practice-as-research explores embodied cultural memory and intangible cultural heritage through sound installation. We are working in collaboration with Coventry Cathedral in support of the City of Culture programme. Our first Found Sound installation was attended by c.450 people over two days in September 2019. For Coventry Creates we have developed a digital version of the project online, in partnership with Connecting Cultures GRP and Innovative Manufacturing and Future Materials GRP, in preparation for new work for 2021. The funding has been used to enable the sound designer to collaborate with a digital practitioner and interdisciplinary researcher to create an immersive sound experience for people at home, made from ‘found sound’ in the cathedral archive.
Kieran Lucas is a sound designer, sound artist and theatre-maker. He is a founding member of Barrel Organ theatre company & associate artist at Coney. He is an alumnus of Warwick University. Alongside his work in theatre and performance Kieran has worked on several audio, radio & digital projects including commissions with Headlong & Imperial War Museum and numerous interactive audio games with Coney. Kieran has also designed audio installations for St. Paul's Cathedral, Coventry Cathedral & Natural History Museum. James Ball is a production manager, technician and occasional web developer. He works primarily in theatre, live music and outdoor art although his specialisation is in sound. Previous work includes: Saint Etienne (Front of House Sound); The Story Museum, Oxford (Technical Design Lead); Roundabout, Paines Plough (Technical Manager); Wild Works Theatre Company (Production Manager). He has a degree in music from Oxford Brookes University where he specialised in electronic composition, the sound of the human voice and self-generative music.
